Why a rugged tablet pc is still a great idea for enterprise mobility


The advent of iPads and similar devices has created a surge of interest in putting technology int eh hands of mobile workers. Consumers everywhere can now use remote devices for all manner of tasks, from browsing the web to taking photos. The rapid proliferation of such devices and theircomparatively low cost – naturally leads consumers to wonder whether rugged tablet PCs and other ruggedized devices are the best option for field use.

Some facts.

While the initial purchase cost is more expensive, total cost of ownership for rugged tablet computers has been found to be much lower over the product’s lifetime. Ruggedized devices are designed for adverse conditions and have long battery life, meaning that they last much longer than consumer-grade products. They also prove more reliable, with fewer operating issues, less data loss and fewer repair costs over the years.

This has an impact on more than just the rugged tablet computer itself. For example, suppose a client in field service relies upon a consumer grade device and it breaks down. He then needs to travel back to the office to get a replacement, or have one sent out to him. That could mean traveling hundreds of miles, resulting in a lost day of work and subsequent delays. With rugged tablet PCs, those risks are reduced considerably.

Whilst application designers will always aim to provide field workers with drop down and multiple choice routes for data entry sometimes needs to add a narrative to a record so using a keyboard is unavoidable. Users of rugged tablets are often stuck with using the on screen keyboard when the most ergonomic route may well be a specific numeric keypad, especially in high volume scenarios like Direct Store Delivery. With our integrated numeric backlit and tactile keypad and available full QWERTY users can capture valuable information to ensure better business decisions and provide increased customer service. The integrated keypad is a backlit numeric keypad that includes programmable keys as well as Enter, up / down / left / right navigation, tab, escape,Security, rotate display, function key barcode scan and suspend/power Full Stop! Also included is a built in decimal point/full stop key. No more assigning short cuts from other keys. Very useful where surveying and measurements are being recorded.

"What happens if I start synching data and my connection gets dropped? Is there any synchronization management built into the solution" If the mobile worker’s connectivity is lost in the middle of synchronizing data, the system tracks where it left off and will begin syncing again from the exact same place when connectivity becomes available again. This feature greatly minimizes transmission costs and optimizes user productivity. Customers can prioritize their sync networks as well as set their sync preferences so the system will begin synching at their preferred times or based on an event within the data collection process. If no network is available at the defined times, the system will keep trying to sync until successful. This process is autonomous with the mobile worker taking no action. And, if the mobile worker is in the middle of collecting data at the time of the scheduled sync, the sync engine runs in the background and does not take over the screen or slow performance. Do I have the option to lock down the device so my mobile workers can’t inadvertently download viruses, games, etc?

Administrators can completely customize what features the users have access to on their devices. For example, devices can be locked down in Kiosk Mode to prevent users from installing games or applications that IT would then be forced to support.

Administrators can also control the menu access, thereby giving access to only those menu items they deem appropriate.
