Yesterday we mentioned how businesses needed to access pre-built enterprise mobility apps to plug the upcoming productivity gap. First up some thoughts on devices to run your app on...
One of the first lessons in enterprise mobility is that when buying devices especially in large numbers the longevity of the device and its suitability for the environment is important. Rolling out 1000 devices into a mission critical operation only to find out 6 months later that the unit is no longer available can be a nuisance. This pales into insignificance when the project team realise that the devices cannot be repaired either. Don't think this only happens to small businesses, many large deployments have suffered from this and embarrassingly ended up having to refresh devices in a short period of time.
Devices designed to be used in high utility scenarios commonly have life cycles measured in years rather than months. So picking the right one is a smart move when considering the long term costs of deployment training and repair.
Manufacturers and their channel partners in this area have managed to make commodities of these products to the point where they are widely available at ever more attractive prices. The unfortunate consequence being that there are many companies reselling knowledge they don't have so be careful when you select a vendor.
The lesson with rugged mobile business solution is to find someone who can really add value to your deployment in terms of device selection and support. Create a Gold Build which defines your device and app, load an app built from a platform either from scratch or from our app store and stick with it.
Tomorrow, operating systems..
