FAQ Mobile Computing for Commercial Bee Keepers

Do I have to use a specialist rugged handheld computer in order to operate XenBee?
No, you can use any Windows Mobile PDA Smartphone or a Tablet computer using XP Vista or 7. Please contact us for ideas on devices - there are plenty to choose from!

What level of tracking is included?
You can operate at whichever level you choose; Site, Hive, Queen or Super. Just remember that the level and quality of information you are able to report on depends on the level of information you enter. If you record at the Site level only, then you can track at the Site level only. We also offer a Google map tracking interface so you can see users on a large site.

Who can access my data?
Only those whom you have authorised to do so.

How do I identify my hives?
This is achieved by attaching a code and/or barcode to the hive and recording within the application. The barcode is then scanned by the barcode reader attached to the handheld computer, which makes the hive information immediately available to you. If you are not using a handheld computer with barcode scanner, you can locate the hive from a list on the desktop.

What kind of Barcodes should be used?
Whilst optional Barcodes are a great idea for boosting accuracy. Linear 1 Dimensional are easy to print and read with off the shelf equipment. Specifically CODE39, CODE128.

As an aid to record keeping and traceability

  • Control the spread of disease by managing it effectively
  • Demonstrate the quality of your product by being able to track it back to source
  • Trace hive activities and movements easily and efficiently
  • Establish profitability by comparing site productivity with costs

Help you increase profitability

  • While in the field, enter data once using a handheld computer for accurate and instant record keeping
  • Significantly reduce the amount of manual paperwork

Plant Breeders automate and secure your work...in the field!

Seed breeding is a vital science for the development of new varieties of plant.
We can provide a mechanism to automate the process of planning a breeding programme, analysing the results, and feeding those results back to strengthen future programmes.

XenBreeda has the flexibility to cater for breeders of different crop types: vegetables, agronomic crops, forage, flowers and forestry. It gives seed companies a complete view of the life-cycle of seed products.
By having visibility of the pedigree and parentage of those plants which perform well and become viable commercial products, a seed development company can focus on profitable and successful lines. This will enable them to reduce the number of dead-end breeding programmes, and shorten the time-to-market of those varieties with commercial potential.

Take this capability into the field with you, removing the difficulties and potential hazards of double entering your data:

  • Ensure the security of your valuable information
  • Provide traceability of product’s progeny and parentage.
  • Plan your breeding programmes to coincide with other activities throughout the year

Have a problem with SSL?

If you are specifying a system for mobile workers and have got to the 'what do we do about mobile security' part of your to do list you may by now be aware that SSL VPN vendors are once again working frantically to plug yet another inherent flaw in the IETF SSL VPN standards.

The IDG News Service describes the possible effects of an SSL VPN flaw thus: "..lets attackers intercept secure SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) communications between computers using what's known as a man-in-the-middle attack"
You can read the whole story here.

SSL's weaknesses and propensity to suffer from Man-in-the-Middle and other attacks, especially in wireless environments, has long been known and so the designers and developers at NetMotion Wireless constructed the Mobility XE architecture to mitigate against them. You can read more in the NetMotion Wireless White Paper: "Security for Wireless Networks"
